Budget Backpacking Tips for Exploring Spain's Hidden Gems

Spain, home to iconic cities like Barcelona and Madrid, beckons travellers from around the world with its vibrant culture, delicious cuisine, and rich history. In Barcelona, you can witness incredible sites like the historical Sagrada Familia Church or head to Museu Picasso to look at Pablo Picasso's incredible oeuvre. Meanwhile, Madrid boasts landmarks like the Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace of Madrid. However, beyond the bustling streets of Spain's amazing cities lie hidden gems waiting to be explored.

From the rugged coastline of the Costa Brava to the medieval charm of Toledo, Spain is brimming with lesser-known cities and towns that offer a more authentic and budget-friendly experience for backpackers. Here are some tips to help you make the most out of your budget backpacking trip through Spain's treasures:

Travel during the shoulder season

To maximise your budget and avoid the tourist crowds, plan your trip during the shoulder seasons. In Spain, shoulder season generally runs from March to June and September to October. During these times, you'll find cheaper accommodation rates, fewer tourists, and milder weather that's ideal for walking around and sightseeing.

This is especially true for destinations like Andalusia and the Valencia region, where it can get too hot in the summer to be active all day. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to witness festivals and events unique to each region, such as the Fallas festival in Valencia or the Feria de Abril in Seville.

Utilise budget airlines

One of the biggest expenses when planning a backpacking trip through Spain is often the cost of aeroplane tickets. However, with budget carriers, you can find cheap flights to various Spanish cities with little to no fuss.

Take easyJet: their website has an easy-to-use low fare finder that gives users an overview of flight prices to the destination of their choice, be it Alicante, Almeria, or Bilbao. Also, keep an eye out for special deals and discounts, and consider booking your flights well in advance to secure the best prices.

It's also noteworthy to mention that flight deals are better on some days than others. For instance, opt for Friday morning rather than Friday night flights, which can usually net you a better price.

Stay in hostels or budget accommodation

Hostels are quite economical and provide great opportunities to meet fellow travellers with whom you can exchange tips and experiences. In cities like Granada and Seville, you'll find charming hostels housed in historic buildings that can offer a unique and affordable lodging experience.

Alternatively, you can consider staying in budget hotels like Travelodge, which provides comfortable accommodations at affordable prices. With locations in Alicante, Malaga, and Murcia, this hotel chain gives budget-conscious travellers a convenient and reliable lodging option.

Take advantage of free activities

Many of Spain's hidden gems offer free or low-cost activities and attractions. Explore historic neighbourhoods, wander through local markets, hike scenic trails, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere without spending a fortune.

Some options for this include visiting the Aqueduct of Segovia or taking a stroll along the ancient city walls of Avila for panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Research free walking tours and cultural events happening during your visit to make the most of your budget backpacking excursion.

Eat like a local

Sampling Spain's culinary delights doesn't have to mean emptying your wallet. Opt for local markets, street food vendors, and small family-run restaurants to experience authentic Spanish cuisine at a budget-friendly price.

If your itinerary takes you to Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia, make sure you try the tapas at dive bars like Tabanco El Pasaje. Here, you can get cheap tapas and beer, and watch a live flamenco show. Elsewhere, savour regional specialities like paella in Valencia or pintxos in San Sebastian.

Backpacking through Spain's hidden gems on a budget is not only possible but also incredibly rewarding. Armed with the tips above, you can experience the beauty of Spain without breaking the bank. So grab your backpack, lace up your walking shoes, and embark on an adventure of a lifetime through Spain's lesser-known treasures.
